ASU Celebrates Veterinary Medicine Week


The School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM) of the Aklan State University, Banga, Aklan held its 5th Annual Veterinary Medicine Week and 9th Lecture Series. The theme of the celebration was: "Updates in the Veterinary Profession Toward Practice and Application for Modern Veterinarian". It was held on February 12 to 16, 2007, ASU Banga.
The celebration kicked off with a mass and blessing of the Rabies Diagnostic Laboratory. Atty. Diego M. Luces who represented the Provincial Governor, Hon. Carlito S. Marquez, President Benny A. Palma, President Emeritus Helmar E. Aguilar and majority of the university officials, graced the inauguration and opening program.
In an interview, SVM Dean Dr. Ma. Regina CabaƱes said that they are inspired by the presence of Dr. Palma and Dr. Aguilar, who spearheaded the establishment of SVM. She added that Dr. Palma’s assurance of full support for the SVM was heartwarming.
SCIENCE QUIZ SHOW
The 1st Interschool Science Quiz Show was held in the afternoon. Out of the eight competing teams, the Libacao National Forestry Vocational High School bagged the first place. Aguinaldo T. Repieded Sr. Integrated School won the second place while the ASU Laboratory High School got the third place. The winners received a trophy and cash prizes. The quiz show aimed at encouraging high school students of Aklan to pursue Veterinary Medicine.
The Veterinary Medicine Student Organization (VMSO) and Veterinary Medicine Clinicians Club (VMCC) held a lecture series for the VetMed Students on the second day. The guest speakers were Dr. Modesto J. Mapeso, former Regional Director of National Meat Inspection Commission who talked about "Veterinary Ethics", Regional Director of National Meat Inspection Service Dr. Emmanuel Lemana lectured on "Priority Programs of NMIS" while former PAHA, PLLP President Dr. Pedrito Peralta, discussed "Modern Method of Disease Diagnosis"
The week-long affair also included product demonstrations of the event sponsors, such as the BMEG, Farmer’s Edge, Love Feeds, Bayer, Philippines, and Belman Laboratories. In addition, a Dog Show was held in the morning of February 15, 2007 at the Pastrana Park, Kalibo, Aklan in cooperation with the Aklan Medical Society. Then the VetMed Challenge, a competition of skills and intellect for the DVM students followed.
The clinicians, students, faculty and staff, in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture conducted a vaccination drive at the different barangays of Banga. One group held rabies vaccination at Barangay Tabayon while the two other groups conducted hemorrhagic septicemia vaccination at Barangays Cupang and Ugsod.
