To develop sportsmanship, camaraderie, and physical fitness and capabilities of Aklanon athletes, Gov. Carlito S. Marquez, and his administration came up with an annual sports development program. A Provincial framework that will guide every Aklanon youth and sports enthusiasts of the province was drafted, approved and being implemented.
The provincial government first launched the monthly age group tournaments in chess, boxing and lawn tennis events. The monthly boxing at the park competitions initiated by then governor and now Congressman Joeben Miraflores and the Governor’s Cup to name a few are being implemented.
All those athletes who excelled in the provincial competitions represented Aklan in the national sports competitions. With the leadership of the Provincial Sports Development Officer III, Mr. Wilfredo R. Neri, those athletes have again placed Aklan in the sports map.
In the Chess Event:
MIRA T. MIRANO, the 2006 champion national age group chess championships in Manila coveted the Bronze Medal in the International Age group Chess Championship in Jakarta, Indonesia; 5th place in the International Age Group Chess Championship in Singapore, and 2007 Champion – National Age Group Chess Championship in Mandaluyong City.
SUSAN GRACE T. NERI
– is 2006 National Age Group Chess Champion in Manila; 5th place in International Age Group Chess Championship in Singapore and 2007 Gold Medalist in the conduct of the West Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet in Iloilo City.
ALLEN T. MIRANO – National PRISAA Chess Champion last April 15-21, 2007 in Iloilo City.
In Boxing Event:
JOSE RECAFORTE, the 2004 Gold Medalist of West Visayan Regional Athletic Association Meet in San Jose, Antique;
ANDY SENERES -2005 Gold Medalist West Visayan Regional Athletic Association Meet in Iloilo

MERILYN D. TEODOSIO –National Junior Champion in Neuva Ecija, 2006 Bronze Medalist in Sabah, Malaysia and Gold Medalist in Thailand.
In Taekwondo Event:
REX BUDAY is a Gold Medalist, Welterweight Division in the CHAVES-PALMARES INTERNATIONAL TAEKWONDO CHAMPIONSHIP in Passi City last April 29, 2007;
MARIO YECLA is a Gold Medalist Bantamweight Division in the Chaves-Palmares International Taekwondo Championship in Passi City last April 29, 2007 and;
MELVIN ARBOLEDA is Gold Medalist Lightweight Division in the Chaves-Palmares Inter-Cities Taekwondo Championship in Passi City last April 29, 2007.
The government is now focused at the construction of a sports complex that will house all sports events in preparation for Aklan’s hosting of Regional and National Sports competitions. This vision and mission of Cong. Joeben Miraflores, Gov. Carlito Marquez and the Sports Development Committee of Aklan will establish strong linkages with other government and non-government organizations once it is realized.
The people of Aklan is expected to support all the programs in sports development by revitalizing and institutionalizing the provincial sports and physical fitness Development Coucil thru its provincial school board funds and the 20 percent IRA Development Fund as sources for our sports development program.
Mr. Wilfredo Neri who is a sports enthusiasts himself, presented recently the siblings Mira and Allen Mirano during its Talakayan with ACTV, together with the parents and teachers of the two champions from Banga Elementary School, Banga, Aklan. /MP
