The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) under the stewardship of its newly assigned District Engineer, Roberto J. Cabigas is currently up on its toes implementing vital infrastructure projects in Aklan in support of the province’ two major thrust – agriculture and tourism.
At present, DPWH-Aklan, said DE Cabigas, is gving much attention to the maintenance and rehabilitation of some portions of the national highway leading to Boracay Island, which is a priority program of the government in support of the province’ booming tourism industry.
Dubbed by DE Cabigas as a VIP area, parts of the national highway the DPWH is giving much attention to the Barangay Caticlan, Malay and from Malay to Buruanga town, currently undergoing asphalt overlays.
In the island of Boracay, the DPWH is now concreting a portion of the road leading to the dumpsite with a P15 million budget.
DE Cabigas also revealed that the road network from Kalibo to Nabas and Pandan is a very good road with concreted and asphalted portions. The road network from Pandan to Libertad, which is still a rough road is proposed to be funded by the foreign-assisted Project Management Office of the DPWH.
Among Aklan’s bridges, the one in Ibajay is already 90 percent completed. It will be finished soon while the Kalibo Bridge is to undergo retrofitting.
To lessen the pressure on Kalibo Bridge, DE Cabigas said there are now feasibility studies for the construction of a circumferential road from Barangay Tigayon, Kalibo to Lezo and Numancia towns in the western side of Aklan. There is also a feasibility study for the construction of a road from Tigayon to Kalibo Airport. By next year, Cabigas sees that the project, which will be foreign – funded, would be realized. In Aklan, there are four special bridges, called the Tulay ng Pangulo, Cabigas added.
“These steel bridges with materials and designs coming from the United Kingdom, and most of these here in Aklan are already operational,” DE Cabigas said.
The bridges are seen to make transport of farmers’ produce from barangays easily brought to markets.
The DPWH Kalibo is also taking care of the road leading to the Kalibo Airport by widening it and repairing canals and box culvert. /MP
