Tricycle Fare Increase Inevitable

by Ambrosio Villorente

Picture above shows Hon. Ronce Reyes (left), Chairman, Commitee on Transportation, Sangguniang Bayan of Kalibo with Mr. Valdemore Cunanan, Chief of the Land Transportation Office, Kalibo, Aklan during the public hearing of the request of the Kalibo Tricycle operators and Drivers Association, Inc. (FOKTODAI) to increase the tricycle fare from P6.50 to P7.50 per passenger per ride. Picture below are tricycle operators, drivers, students, businessmen and commuters patronizing tricycles to move around Kalibo during the public hearing.

It is inevitable. Tricycle fare in Kalibo will increase from the present P6.50 to P7.50 to even P8.00 per passenger per ride.
The Sangguniang Bayan (SB) of Kalibo has received requests from the 18 presidents of the 18 association which compose the FOKTO-DAI requesting to increase the present rate of tricycle fare of P6.50 to P7.50. According to them, these was the agreement made in October 2005 that there will be automatic increase of P1.00 if the cost of fuel will reach more than P45.00 per liter. Since the cost of gasoline today has exceeded the P45.00 per liter limit, they are now requesting to collect the P1.00 increase.
In a public hearing presided by Hon. Ronce Reyes, Chairman, Committee on Trans-portation of the Sang-guniang Bayan of Kalibo, their request was eloquently presented. The public hearing was held in the afternoon of Monday, January 7, 2008 in the Capt. Gil Mijares Bldg., Kalibo, Aklan.
All those present, were sympathetic to the request of the FOKTODAI on condition that: 1. the drivers must obey all traffic laws, rules and regulations, 2. the drivers will show at all times road courtesy, behave properly and provide proper maintainance to the respective vehicles at all times, 3. the LGU Kalibo must provide all proper and necessary signages for compliance of the drivers and pedestrians; and 4. the LGU Kalibo to enforce strictly its municipal traffic code. To remove the irritants between the driver and the commuters, it was suggested that the fare must be divisible by P1.00 such as P7.00, P8.00. This will avoid the P0.50 change which the driver often does not have. /MP
