WVRAAM 2010 Experience Amazing Aklan

by CHRISTY ANN NAVARRA

The last time the Province of Aklan hosted WVRAA meet was in January 1995, I was in grade III then. Now, I am a college graduate to witness the 2010 WVRAA meet, after 15 years. It excites me to think that WVRAA meet is being held once again here in Aklan. I’m determined not to let the chance pass without witnessing its opening ceremonies on March 15.
The program started with a very impressive production number. A fabulous showcase of Aklan’s major attractions featuring the piƱa fiber, presented through a stunning fashion show; the colorful Ati-Atihan dances to the beats of the drums in brilliant costumes; the higante parade of the towns of Tangalan, Malinao, and Nabas that added fascination, the pride of Aklan. Nothing beats the captivating wonders of Boracay island paradise that capture the hearts of the world. God is so good and Aklan is very blessed.
The Province of Aklan and its people are boastful during the day showing their best with the newly constructed Aklan Sports Complex in Calangcang, Makato. Recalling my first WVRAAM experience way back in 1995, the idea of sports complex facilities consisting of the grandstand, the offices, the courts, the lawn, swimming pool, track and field for athletics, archery and football fields were figments of my imagination. After 15 years, the Sports Complex is experiencing a drastic make over. A complex for sports development is indeed realized.
Aklan is a fast developing as an economic province in Western Visayas. With the growth of business and tourist over the years, Aklan has become imperative for visitors who keep coming back. It has been said over and again how amazing Aklan is. Beyond the sand, the sound and the fiber, are the Aklanon brand of courtesy and hospitality.
Watching the showcase of Aklan’s major attractions impressed me so much and I’m sure most of the spectators would agree with me. We couldn’t help but sigh, "Wow!" Who won’t be proud to be an Aklanon? We are so blessed for such a wonderful gift. A gift of magnificent tourist spots, rich culture, very passionate people and government officials who unified in order to bring out the best of the province and its people.
Yes, behind great performances is a promised story realized. It definitely endures great risk. As if there’s no room for mistakes and frustrations. Just give in the best notwithstanding the priceless time, efforts and sacrifices rendered by the people behind the event. In the end, it’s in taking risk that one enjoys the happiness of success.
Aklan’s various array of attractions never cease to amaze me. I found myself staring and stunned realizing how grateful I am for being an Aklanon. I became a fan of my very own province.
For me, this event is a celebration of Aklanon people’s defining attitudes and cultural identity portrayed in the face of adversity is beauty that radiates from within. Aklan is simply amazing!
Indeed the vision of the late Governor Corazon L. Cabagnot is about fulfilled. She started Calangcang Sports Complex, Governor Carlito S. Marquez completes it. Cabagnot defeated Marquez in the local election of May 1992 for the position of Governor of Aklan, but Marquez completed a project heavily criticized Cabagnot started.
Now, Calangcang Sports Complex is highly appreciated by the Aklanon and the athletic delegations from Capiz, Antique, Iloilo, Negros Occidental, and Guimaras. /MP
