DA 6 Gives 5,000 Fruit Trees Seedlings To Barotac Viejo

To intensify production of high value crops
and utilize idle upland areas, the Department of Agriculture (DA) 6 gave some
5,000 fruit tree seedlings to the municipality of Barotac Viejo, Iloilo
recently.
Director Larry P. Nacionales of DA 6 said that
the seedlings were part of the commitment of Secretary Proceso J. Alcala during
his visit to the municipality last May 8 this year.
"Secretary Alcala
saw the potential of growing fruit trees in the municipality and emphasized on
the demand in the current market these days." explained Nacionales.
“The fruit trees were produced from DA 6
research outreach stations based at Sta. Barbara, Iloilo, Sigma and Dumarao,
Capiz,” Nacionales reported.
The fruit trees were composed of
2,200-jackfruit, 1,500-mango, 500-guyabano, 300-marang, 200-pomelo,
200-kamunsil and 100-rambutan.
The seedlings were turned over to Mayor Niel
Tupas III of Barotac Viejo. It will be planted at the municipal integrated
farming system techno-demo farm located at barangay Nueva Invention.
Mr. Miles Ganzon, municipal administrator said
that some of the seedlings will be distributed to barangay officials for
planting in their respective barangays.
"This will ensure maintenance and
survival of the seedlings and are expected to bear fruits in five years
time", Ganzon assured.
Aside from fruit trees seedlings, Secretary
Alcala also committed 10 kg. hybrid peanut seedlings from Region 2.
This was also given to the
municipality for propagation at barangay San Antonio communal garden. The
produce will be distributed to interested farmers in the municipality. /MP
