Miagao Municipal Mayor, Dr. Macario N.
Napulan could not help but thank the Department of Agriculture (DA) Regional
Field Office 6 through Regional Technical Director Joyce S. Wendam for the
grant of P2.5 million for the construction of farm-to-market road (FMR) project
during the conduct of the Agricultural Information Caravan and Technology Forum
at JRBB Hall, Miagao, Iloilo recently.
The amount taken from the DA’s Grassroots
Participatory Budgeting will be used for the road rehab and FMR construction of
Brgy. SitioGinesPalaca-Tugura-ao road, Brgy.Igbugo-Cawayananroad, and Brgy.
PungtodMonteclaro-Sibucao road sections.
With the most number of barangays in the
whole country, Miagao has more than half of its total land area devoted to
agriculture which are planted to rice, corn, peanuts, bulb onion, mango, cacao,
coffee, banana, legumes, root crops, tomato, eggplant and other high value
commercial crops. Last year, Miagao has reached 13,635.12 metric tons (MT) production
with 151 percent sufficiency level.
“The only way for this municipality to
progress is through agriculture that is why we are enjoining the farmers to be
adoptive to the agricultural technologies and to organize themselves into
associations which will give them access to different programs of the DA,” said
Mayor Napulan.
The FMR project will benefit farmers,
fisherfolks and local residents of Miagao according to Dr. Wendam. She
encouraged the participants of the information caravan to convert at least five
percent of their area into organic agriculture sites.
Dr. Wendam suggested to Mayor Napulan to pass
a municipal ordinance on organic agriculture program and to create a local
technical committee in their town in order for them to access the various
organic agriculture projects such as the construction of an organic trading
post which will accommodate the bulk of organic inputs and products of farmers
in Miag-ao.
Through the DA-Philippine Rural Development
Program, more infrastructure projects will be extended to the municipalities.
Thus, Dr. Wendam emphasized to the local government unit and farmers the need
to organize and register their association. She also suggested to submit
feasible project proposals.
DA 6 technical staff provided farmers
agricultural technology updates and information about the various programs of
the agency. Farmers also received production guide materials, corn seeds,
farmers record book among others. /MP
