In Protection Relay-Setting Contest

In an effort to boost protection system reliability through skills and technology enhancement, power grid operator NGCP recently held a Protection Relay-Setting Competition for its System Operations (SO) technical personnel from all over the country.

NGCP engineers’ highly specialized technical expertise on power protection systems were on full display at the competition held recently. The competition events included a technical quiz, relay-setting application, and relay-setting implementation, which all showcased the level of efficiency, as well as compliance with operational and safety procedures. 

“Technical competitions are innovative training tools that support the continuous improvement of NGCP’s technical competence. We want to further improve our operations and ensure that all requirements of the Philippine Grid Code are met. Aside from protection relay-setting, we also have competitions for linemen, maintenance and testing, and substation personnel. I am very proud of all our engineers and technicians. They’re the heart of the corporation,” said NGCP President and CEO Henry Sy, Jr.

At the event, SO representatives from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao shared best practices on power system protection while engaging in friendly competition. Visayas SO topped the competition events and was declared the overall champion. Luzon and Mindanao SO placed 1st runner-up and 2nd runner-up, respectively.

The Philippine Grid Code prescribes that the grid have adequate and coordinated primary and back-up protection at all times to limit the magnitude of grid disturbances when a fault or equipment failure occurs. As the grid operator, NGCP designs, installs, and maintains the grid’s protection system that will ensure the timely disconnection of faulted facilities and equipment.

NGCP is a privately owned corporation in charge of operating, maintaining, and developing the country’s power grid. It transmits high-voltage electricity through “power superhighways” that include the interconnected system of transmission lines, towers, substations, and related assets. The consortium holds the 25-year concession to operate the country’s power transmission network and is comprised of Monte Oro Grid Resources Corp., led by Henry Sy, Jr., Calaca High Power Corporation, led by Robert Coyiuto, Jr., and the State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) as technical partner. /MP
