50 Indigenous People Trains On Corn Production

The Department of Agriculture, RFO 6 trained 50
Indigenous People (IPs) from Sitio Kabarangkalan, barangay Sto. Tomas, Barotac
Viejo, Iloilo on corn production technology last June 9-10, 2015.
The training aimed to equip the IPs on producing white
and glutinous corn for human consumption purposes in support to the Food Staple
Sufficiency Program of the Aquino administration.
Vice Mayor Jovino Tugbang, Jr. of Barotac Viejo said
that the municipal government supports agricultural endeavor of the IPs in the
two sitios of Kabarangkalan and Nagpana.
“We have given them various livelihood training
programs to improve their economic situation and encourage them to stay in
their respective communities.” Tugbang added
Tugbang said that he is also a corn planter using
organic inputs in order to minimize production inputs.
He encouraged the IPs to be industrious enough to make
use of the natural resources and maintain sanitation in their farms.
Meanwhile, Mr. Romie Elosendo, President of
Kabarangkalan Minority Association (KAMIAS) said that having to develop their
areas signifies their dedication, industry and commitment to show that IPs are
now educated.
Elosendo stressed that through unity and cooperation
they can contribute to agricultural development specifically in corn production
for consumption purposes.
He added that what they have learned on the training
will be their investment in properly utilizing their respective areas given to
them by the local government unit.
Among the topics discussed during the training
are: variety selection, seed preparation
and storage, land preparation and crop establishment, common pests and diseases
of corn and their management, soil fertility management, fertilization and
harvest management. /MP
