Support Web-based Forum On Climate Issues

The Climate Change Commission (CCC) which is under the Office of the President presented the Knowledge Management (KM) Communication Strategies and Community of Practice among technical personnel of the Department of Agriculture (DA), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC), Agricultural Training Institute and the Municipal Agriculture Offices of Dumangas, Janiuay, Mina and Pototan, Iloilo at Sarabia Manor Hotel and Convention Center, September 24.

Spearheading the Component 1 of the Philippine Climate Change Adaptation Project (PhilCCAP), the CCC conducted the said workshop in order to equip the project beneficiaries and partner agencies on how to use an online-based community for interactive exchange of information on climate issues. PhilCCAP, a World Bank-assisted program, seeks to improve the country’s food security by capacitating the different sectors to protect environment and agriculture from climate change and its effects.

CCC Asec. Joyceline Goco said “Agriculture is the highly vulnerable sector. Thus, it is important for the farmers to understand climate change and its effects. It’s high time for the local government units and our partner agencies to mainstream climate change.”

The CCC aims to capacitate the local stakeholders in identifying and implementing potential adaptation steps suited in their communities. Thus, the electronic-based KM system is developed to increase the public’s knowledge on how to avert the climate change effects to human security, agriculture, and environment. 

“We hope that DA and DENR would regularly upload and share technical information in our website in order to help policy-makers decide on what climate change mitigation strategies to adapt,” Asec. Goco added. 

PCIC Regional Manager Charlito Brilleta told stakeholders that in response to the damages brought about by climate to agricultural crops, the agency has P99 million funds for premium subsidies of farmers in Western Visayas who are listed in the Registry System for Basic Sectors in Agriculture. /MP
