The Community Based Disaster Risks Reduction Project (CBDRR) in Kalibo, Ibajay, and Tangalan was launched. The launching program was held at Nenette’s garden, Andagao, Kalibo, Aklan on Wednesday, May 29, 2013.
This project is an expansion of the existing CBDRR in Barangays Aliputos and Bulwang, Numancia and in Brgys. Bakhaw Sur and Norte, and Mobo, Kalibo which began in 2011.
The expansion project will cover another five barangays which are Tinigao, Kalibo, Laguinbanua, and Aslum, Ibajay; and Panayakan and Jawili, Tangalan, Aklan.
The project principally aims to improve safety and resilience of those target communities and institutions to better prepare for and reduce disaster risks.
Barangay officials in the target barangays, school heads in those barangays, DepEd Aklan officials, Philippine Red Cross Aklan chapter staff and volunteers led by Atty. Ronquillo C. Tolentino, attended the launching program.
The CBDRR is duly funded by the Government of Finland through the Finnish Red Cross which is represented in the launching by Johanna Klinge – project management support delegate.
The CBDRR started in 2011 in Aliputos and Bulwang, Numancia and in Mobo, Bakhaw Sur and Norte, Kalibo.
According to Ms. Arceli Pelayo, Red Cross Aklan chapter administrator the team from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland and Finnish Red Cross was greatly impressed of the project implementation in Aklan during their monitoring visit in 2012. The team found the great community acceptance and full participation in the project.
These inspired the team to double the coverage of the project and to continue the assistance up to the year 2015. /MP
