The Federation of Provincial Press Clubs of the Philippines, Inc. (FPPC) denounced recently the killing of another journalist in Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro.
Vergel Bico, publisher of Kalahi, was shot dead by two unidentified motorcycle riding gunmen. Bico died of several gunshot wounds in the head.
Bico, a resident of Barangay Pachoa, Calapan City, was shot repeatedly with a 45 caliber pistol at close range.
Speaking through Josef Punay, FPPC vice president said, the police should leave no stone unturned in solving the murder of Bico, one of the recent victims of violence against members of the Fourth Estate. Punay said the authorities, in the face of all these killings, should consider allowing journalists to possess firearms to protect themselves.
The unabated killings of journalists until these days will be one of the major concerns up for deliberation in the forthcoming FPPC 50th anniversary on Oct. 18-20, 2013 to be held at the Aklan State University, Banga, and Boracay Island, Malay, Aklan. /MP
