Nonito, Aklan’s Adopted Son Lifts The Filipino Spirits

by ODON S. BANDIOLA

Go, go, Nonito! Lift the Filipino spirits and raise them once more to a reinvigorated sense of pride and glory.  Get that win atop the ring on Sunday, from another Mexican, Jorge Arce, with your World Boxing Organization super bantamweight title at stake.

The ignominous defeat suffered by Manny in the hands of Mexican warrior, Juan Manuel Marquez last Dec. 9, Sunday shattered the Filipino feelings and sense of superiority. They were humiliated and brokenhearted that pushed a man in Guimaras to commit suicide.

Little did many Filipino’s  predicted a Manny Pacquiao loss nor entertained any idea that Manny shall go down to the ignominy of being blasted into dreamland by Marquez’  more explosive right fist.

I was confident Nonito Donaire, Jr., whose wife Rachel hails from Aklan, reason why he, too, was officially adopted as “Son of Aklan,” delivered the redemption one week later on Sunday, Dec. 16.

While Arce is a brawler and a very durable warrior, his fighting style is tailored –fit for Nonito’s double-barrelled killer blows, Nonito’s left hook which sent Montiel into dreamland and his right straight which forced Nishioka into retirement.

Nonito’s finger in his left hand which is proned to injury in a couple of past fights had completely healed. It did not deter Nonito’s KO victory against Arce.

Nonito said his fight against Arce was never motivated by revenge. For sure, the fight was a venue for rejuvenation of every Filipino whose pride was not only pricked but shattered almost beyond restoration because of Manny’s defeat.

In fact, Nonito is more of a technical fighter than Manny. He ably withered Arce’s brawling style who wilted into submission. Nonito sent him to sleep, and Arce slept soundly 2 minutes and 59 seconds (2:59) of the third round.
