Kulis

“An Artist is not paid by his labor, but for his vision.”
I have been a witness to many Art Gallery Exhibits in Aklan. Always, Art is already a friend to me. It keeps me company from the busy schedule. Art comforts and inspires me of what life has to offer.
Having raised an only child who is an Art enthusiast, she taught me how to appreciate Art. She was six (6) years old when she sold at US$300 her first Oil in canvass. From then on, I committed myself to support her.
“Kulis is Aklanon term for scribble, doodle, or random playful sketch. It may results into a drawing or painting. Kulis (Kuris in Ilonggo) is also a metaphor for the way this group is sketching enthusiasts who show up every Saturday afternoon to look for scenery and subjects to sketch on the spot, “en pleine aire. The group searches models to pose for life drawing,” according to Joe Dureza, the weekend group coordinator. Dureza is an architect, a Balikbayan artist and an experienced Urban Planner from Cawayan, New Washington, Aklan.
The six (6) of the weekend painters felt they have enough presentable works to exhibit decided to launch the maiden output on January 10, 2013 at Saylo Cuisine and Fine Arts Gallery, Kalibo, Aklan. They are Jose Dureza, John Barrios, Rolando Zaballero and wife Jenypher Zaballero, Jeno Andrew Icasas, John Lennar Panaligan and the youngest, 8-year old Asa Barrios. Actually, it was the third time Dureza has exhibited to the public and each time, there is always something exciting about his works.
The group assembled their works and decided to go public in time for the 2013 Sto. Niño Ati-Atihan Festival. The exhibit will run until February 28, 2013. It is open to the public daily, Monday to Sunday at 10:30 am to 11:00 pm. For more information of those interested to join the free weekend session, please email durezart@aol.com or josedureza@yahoo.com. You can also visit AKLAN KULIS at Facebook.
“In art, the hand can never execute anything higher than the heart can imagine.” (RW Emerson). Indeed, I am one of those who bear witness to the Aklanons’ love for art and culture. Through Art Exhibits, you will see the inward significance of an Artist for in “Art as in love, instinct is enough.” /MP
