Aklan Congressman Teodorico T. Haresco, Jr. has refiled the bill at the House of Representatives which seeks to reapportion the Province of Aklan from a lone congressional district into two legislative districts: the East and West districts.
Haresco’s bill is denominated as House Bill No. 112, “An Act Providing For The Reapportionment Of The Lone District Of The Province Of Aklan”.
Luthmyr P. Teoxon relayed the information to the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Aklan who is the Committee Secretary of the House Committee on Local Government chaired by Congressman Pedro B. Acharon, Jr.
This development in the lower house of the 16th Congress was an offshoot of Aklan SP Resolution No. 007, S., 2013 passed by the 16th SP on July 10, 2013, during its 2nd regular session, titled, “A Resolution Requesting Congressman Teodorico T. Haresco, Jr., Representative, Lone District Of Aklan In The House Of Representatives To Refile The House Bill Filed By Former Congressman Florencio T. Miraflores During The 15th Congress Seeking For The Reapportioning Of The Province Of Aklan Into Two Legislative Districts Previously Denominated As House Bill No. 3860.”
Miraflores’ bill on Aklan splitting into two legislative districts was passed by the lower house of the 15th Congress but was stalled in the Senate committee level mainly on the opposition posed by Senator Sergs OsmeÅ„a.
The bill seeks to split Aklan into two legislative districts: the West comprising of the towns of Numancia, Makato, Lezo, Malinao, Tangalan, Ibajay, Nabas, Malay and Buruanga; and the East, composed of the towns of Kalibo, New Washington, Batan, Banga, Balete, Altavas, Libacao and Madalag.
Both proposed districts had already qualified in terms of population of more than 250,000 each. /MP
