NSO Surveys Domestic Visitors

The National Statistics Office (NSO), in cooperation with the Department of Tourism, is currently conducting the 2012 Household Survey on Domestic Visitors (HSDV) to gather household data on domestic tourism for the development and implementation of tourism plans and programs in the country.

The survey started last November 8, 2012. It covers a total samples of 50 households in three (3) barangays, namely Brgy. Poblacion in Madalag, Brgy. Poblacion in Altavas, and Brgy. Morales in Balete.

According to Mr. Blas M. Solidum, Provincial Statistics Officer, the reference period for the survey is from April to September 2012, which means the data to be gathered fall within this 6-month period.

Mr. Solidum explained that domestic visitor refers to any person residing in the Philippines and travels from one municipality to another either for pleasure/vacation, business or professional work, visit friends or relatives, medical reasons, study, religion among others.

“The survey seeks to update baseline data to measure the volume of domestic and international tourism and update the profile and travel characteristics of domestic and outbound visitors throughout the country. Data on HSDV will identify the travel patterns of the Filipino households and estimate the extent and economic contribution of domestic and international tourism in the country,” Solidum said.

He appeals to all respondents to support and cooperate in this data gathering. He assured them that all information furnished to NSO will be held “strictly confidential” and cannot be used for taxation, investigation or law enforcement purposes. /MP
