The Aklan Police Provincial Office (APPO) will participate in Education and Information Seminar on Animal Welfare Laws and issues designed for PNP personnel this May 11, 2012 at Camp Pastor Martelino, New Buswang, Kalibo, Aklan to be conducted by the Animal Kingdom Foundation (AKF).
AKF is commonly known in the Philippines’ animal-welfare world as the local affiliate of the International Wildlife Coalition Trust (IWCT) based in the United Kingdom. Its mission is to support, protect and promote the welfare and the rights of animals and others.
According to APPO director senior superintendent Cornelio T Defensor, the seminar is part of the Letter of Instruction (LOI) 20/07 of the PNP to support the AKF through the Bureau of Animal Industry in the implementation of the Animal Welfare Act of 1998 or Republic Act 8485.
The LOI sets forth PNP operational guide-lines to support the AKF, the Dept of Agriculture, Bureau of Animal Industry for interagency coor-dination effort in the promotion of public awareness on animal welfare in the Philippines and to develop international recognition towards the government, Defensor added.
As one of the implementing agencies, Aklan PNP is committed to ensure the proper implementation of RA 8485 and RA 9482 or the “Anti-Rabies Law” and related rules and regulations. PNP extends assistance to AKF in its various programs requiring police operations, Defensor stressed.
The PNP seminar participants are from the different police stations in Aklan, while the resource speakers are Atty. Heidi M. Cagiuoa – Legal Counsel; Luis M. Buenaflor, Jr. – Operations Director; Greg S. Quimpo – Center Manager; Roland G. Arciga – Senior Veterinarian; Sheena Clavel – Education Officer and Ronald T. Sariego – Senior Researcher.
The following topics will be discussed: Short Video Presentation Introducing the Animal Kingdom Foundation; Responsible Pet Ownership; Health Hazards of Eating Dog Meat; Animal Welfare Laws: The Animal Welfare Law or RA 8485 and The Anti-Rabies Law or RA9482; PNPs Commitment of Support and Enforcement of the Laws. /MP
