by ODON S. BANDIOLA

Three (3) died and 29 persons were injured as typhoon Quinta passed Aklan. Some 444 houses were totally damaged with 1,152 partially destroyed affecting 16,703 families composed of 73,657 persons.

These figures are based on the final report of the Aklan Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) Executive Officer Galo Ibardolaza submitted to Gov. Carlito S. Marquez. Tropical Depression Quinta on Dec. 26, 2012 dumped heavy rains to Aklan severely flooding seven (7) towns along the Aklan River.

Severely flooded during the Christmas calamity are the southern towns of Libacao and Madalag where the headwaters and tributaries of the Aklan River are located. The towns of Banga, Lezo and Malinao, and the capital town of Kalibo and adjoining town of Numancia where the Aklan River and tributaries drain to the Sibuyan Sea at the North were underwater which destroyed farm projects and properties.

In view of these massive destructions, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Aklan declared these towns under the State of Calamity including the town of Ibajay, west of Aklan.

The PDRRMC estimated the damages to agriculture at P13.004 million, and infrastructure and lifelines at P2.188 million.

At the height of the floods, the total number of persons evacuated on those municipalities ravaged by the rampaging waters were 2,637.

One (1) died in Libacao and two (2) persons in Malinao. A total of 25 persons were injured in Lezo and four (4) in Banga.

The floods hit hardest the town of Libacao affecting 4,253 families and 23,282 persons.

The damage to agriculture in the town of Lezo is heaviest estimated at P7.2 million and P5.79 million in Banga. /MP
