“Start ‘em young,” Aklan Vice Governor Gabrielle V. Calizo stressed as she opened the first ever Provincial Inter-School Badminton Cup 2007 at the Acevedo Farms at New Buswang, Kalibo, Aklan last Saturday, September 29 so-dubbed in her honor, being the main backer of the two-day tourney.
The tournament was participated by some 218 young badminton players from some 20 elementary schools, high schools and colleges based in the capital town of Kalibo and the neighboring towns.
“Why badminton? This is the kind of sports discipline that many young Aklanon people have the potential to excel in the future as this is the kind of game where height and heft are not too significant factors to be able to compete with the best in the region and the country,” Vice Governor Calizo emphasized.
The Ati-atihan Badminton Club Director Manolita Q. Acevedo led the tournament organizers. The tournament was divided into various categories: boys and girls, 8 years old and below. The boys and girls, 12 years old and below, both in the elementary level, high school and college category. All badminton events were in the doubles competitions.
The overwhelming turnout inspired Vice Governor Gabrielle V. Calizo to make the Provincial Inter-school Badminton Cup an annual tournament.
