GMA Kapuso Foundation Distributes School Supplies To Students

In line with the opening of the school year, GMA Kapuso Foundation, the socio-civic arm of GMA Network, made the rounds in different parts of the country to distribute backpacks complete with school supplies via its long-standing Unang Hakbang Sa Kinabukasan project.

Compared to last year, the project even increased its number of beneficiaries from 75,000 to 76,000 grade one students this 2014. Distribution to 1,747 schools nationwide took place all throughout May until the first week of June.

“Our hope is to continuously expand the reach of the project and extend help to more underprivileged students particularly in far-flung provinces,” shared GMA Kapuso Foundation EVP and COO Mel Tiangco.

The Foundation visited a total of 32 provinces in Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao and the NCR: Bulacan, Laguna, Rizal, Cavite, Pangasinan, Ilocos Norte, Oriental Mindoro, Abra, Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, Palawan, Zambales, Quirino, Aurora, Benguet, Iloilo, Antique, Leyte,  Cebu, Bohol, Davao del Norte, Lanao del Norte, Lanao del Sur, North Cotabato, Zamboanga, Zamboanga Sibugay, Maguindanao, Sultan Kudarat, Davao Oriental, as well as Quezon City, Caloocan, Navotas, Valenzuela, and Aklan.

Launched in 1997, the project aims to motivate students to put greater value on education by addressing the lack of basic learning materials, which is considered to be one of the primary reasons behind the high rate of drop out among elementary school students.

Its partners include the Department of Education’s Bureau of Elementary Education, Ever Gotesco, and Go Tong Foundation. /MP
