Thirty-two TVET trainers, teachers, registrars and officials of 20 institutions in Aklan participated in the two-day Competency-Based Curriculum Writing Workshop at San Lorenzo College, Kalibo, Aklan on September 27-28, 2005. The workshop was jointly organized by the Assn. of TVET Schools in Aklan (ATSA) and (TESDA)-Aklan Provincial Office.
“The curriculum writing workshop was intended to assist public and private schools in Aklan which plan to offer short-term, 1-3 year courses in formulating curricula which adhere to the competency-based requirement for technical vocational education. With the skills gained from the two-day workshop, we hope we can fast track the submission of the requirements for course registration with TESDA.” Said Ms. Celia de la Cruz, president of ATSA.
“Private enterprises and industry are the customers of TVET schools because they are the ones who will employ or hire the graduates. In competency-based curricula, industry experts were consulted as to what skills and knowledge should the institutions develop in their students so that they may meet the industry standards. To facilitate the course development in the schools, they are given copies of promulgated Training Regulations in various courses (TR) and through the workshop, they are guided on how to use the TR for their curriculum writing,” explained PD Lorena Yunque of TESDA-Aklan.
“We would like also to emphasize that only graduates of short-term and 1-3 year TVET courses registered with TESDA can be granted CAVs or S.Os hence efforts are exerted to assist Aklan institutions to comply with the UTPRAS requirements.”
Atty. Allen S. Quimpo, Chairperson of the Provincial Technical Education and Skills Development Committee emphasized that the Aklan institutions need to offer more short-term and modular courses to respond to the need of the booming tourism industry in Boracay, which targets one million arrivals in the next peak season. /MP
