The people of Kalibo remains fearful for the next flood to barge in to this Ati-Atihan town, two months after the destructive flood brought by typhoon Frank.
During rain showers, one readily notices quite a few people looking around trying to gauge the depth of the water especially near the storm drains. They hope that they would not need to vacate or raise their belongings to higher grounds.
Kalibo Mayor Raymar Rebaldo is still addressing the problem of jammed storm drains through de-clogging as a short-term solution to the problem. He is re-engineering the drainage system of Kalibo as the long term solution which is a part of the task of the rehabilitation task group composed of national and local government officials and key officers including civic, society and religious organizations.
"It is a daunting task and more has yet to be done. Even our temporary workers themselves were also victims, in fact everyone is, but the important thing is, we all work together and do something to contribute to the rehabilitation effort of this capital town," Mayor Rebaldo stressed.
Several streets in Kalibo town centre is already de-clogged by 135 temporarily hired personnel through the Department of Social Welfare and Develop-ment’s "Cash for Work Program". They are supervised by the Local Government of Kalibo but more drains are still to be done even with the rotating day and night work schedule. /MP
