Women In Development is the main topic discussed in the Kapehan Sa Aklan last Saturday, August 30. Vice Governor Gabrielle V. Calizo, Dr. Lyn Salido, Ms. Rebecca L. Mobo and Ms. Manolita Q. Acevedo were the invited resource persons.
The four leading women discussed before the members of the Aklan tri-media their accomplishment in the advancement of Aklanon women.
The four lady Kapehan guests are leading officials of the Soroptimist International of Kalibo (SIK). Vice Governor Calizo is the current president of SIK, Ms. Acevedo is the charter president and Ms. Mobo and Dr. Salido are past presidents. SIK belongs to the Soroptimist International of the Americas. SIK is organized 25 years ago and now observing its silver anniversary with Vice Governor Calizo as president.
Today, SIK is composed of 23 Aklanon professional and businesswomen. They celebrated their 25th founding anniversary on June 25. However, due to the typhoon on June 21, they have postponed their induction of new set of officers on September 25 this year.
The women officials and members of SIK cited their accomplishment in their quest to advance the cause of women. They cited the accomplishment of Miss Maranatha Estrada who was a Richardson Awardee for her volunteer work in the promotion of reproductive health in Makato, Aklan. She was awarded cash and a job offer in the United Nation as soon as she finished her college education.
Mispah Evangelio of Malay, Aklan, an Ati single mother was also presented with Outstanding Woman award by Soroptimist International of the Philippines region.
SIK is also credited for its work in emergency mission such as in dental/medical mission, relief assistance provisions among others. Moreover, SIK provides as well livelihood and skills trainings for women like in the piƱa fiber industry. It is also engaged in environmental protection such as taking care of D. Maagma Street, Kalibo.
Earlier, in the Kapehan, Atty. Ronquillo C. Tolentino, former Aklan Vice Governor paid tribute to the Aklanon women who are actively in all human endeavors like in governance, business and humanitarian projects. /MP
