ILOILO CITY, – The local government of Malay in Aklan has taken the lead to ensure that buildings being constructed in Boracay Island are accessible to persons with disability (PWD).
Owners and managers of establishments have been reminded by the Malay engineers office to make their establishments accessible to persons with disabilities, which is a requirement under Batas Pambansa 344 or Accessibility Law, according to Architect Alberto Saclauso of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
A report by the Regional Committee on Disability Affairs disclosed that many hotels fronting the Boracay beach lack facilities that will make their places accessible to PWDs.
Among the resorts that have been reminded of the liability are the Alice in Wonderland Hotel, Boracay Beach Chalet, La Carmela Resorts Hotel, Seares Palace and Villa de Oro Resort all in Barangay Balabag, in Boracay.
Also informed to construct a decent access for PWDs are the Calypso Diving, Casa Pilar Resorts, the Luna Rosa Refreshment, the Sports Bar and the Tourist Shopping Center in Brgy. Manoc-Manoc, Boracay.
These private buildings have been warned to comply with the accessibility law; they were given ample time to do some renovations, said Saclauso. Also found not accessible for PWDs are the Boracay Police Station and the Caticlan Jetty Port, said the report.
Saclauso reminded government infrastructures and public service offices to start renovations of their buildings so as to provide better service to PWDs.
The Malay LGU as well as the DPWH can have the permits of these resorts cancelled, warned Saclauso. (PNA) /MP
