Alcala Advises Strict Obedience To Ordinance Banning Rice Straw Burning

In Iloilo, farmers have been advised to refrain from burning their rice straw even as local government units (LGUs) are urged to strictly implement their ordinances that ban similar activity.

DA Secretary Proceso Alcala stressed composting project of farm refuses during his visit in Iloilo City where he met with the Aganan River Federation of Irrigators Association in Oton town recently.

Alcala said, "farmers can convert rice straw into organic fertilizer as a hectare of rice straws when left to decompose can reduce the use of inorganic fertilizer by at least two sacks".

He added, "the act will not only help the farmers but will also help the environment.
DA-Regional Agri-Fishery Information Division (RAFID) officer-in-charge James Ogatis interpreted Secretary Alcala’s call as the strong advocacy of the DA towards organic agriculture.

The DA has been extending technical assistance and equipment to various farmers’ group in Region 6 for them to produce organic fertilizer using other biodegradable materials apart from rice straw. (PNA) /MP
