Boracay Fun Board Cup Slated

BY BOY RYAN B. ZABAL
The best windsurfing competition on the east side of the Boracay island is slated on January 9 to13 with Green Yard Funboard Center hosting the 19th edition of the Boracay International Funboard Cup.
The event draws over a hundred windsurfers and kiters from Pacific Rim countries and territories for the slalom, speed and windsurfing competition and the Boracay Big Air Challenge for kiters.
The world-class fun board cup in Boracay is also part of the grand Asian Windsurfing Tour (AWT) held annually in different Asian countries - the Monsoon Madness (Kuantan, Malaysia on January 18 to 20); Bintan (Mana Mana AmSlam, Indonesia on January 24 to 27) followed by Marianas (Marianas Open, Saipan on January 30 to February 4, 2007.)
The sailors are divided into categories for prizes — open (professionals), men’s (up to 29 years of age), ladies, junior master’s (30-39) and master’s (40-49).
The Boracay Cup has also Action Asia speed trials for competitors (ladies and men) for Kiting and Windsurfing events to be held at Bulabog Beach, a 2-km stretch of undeveloped beach with a fringing reef about 0.5 km off shore and a 12-20 knot on-shore winds.
The annual sporting competition, considered the most popular Asian event by the Department of Tourism (DoT), started in 1988 by Roby and Nenette Aguirre Graf of Greenyard Beach Resort when the couple celebrated their wedding anniversary at Bulabog Beach with friends and guests. The regatta eventually became a yearly event for the past 18 years. Nenette, a windsurfing ladies champion in Jeju International Windsurfing Festival in Korea in October 2002, is also the owner of Boracay Beach Resort.
Last year, Vingo Moreno of the Philippines was crowned champion with Xavier Gonzales in second followed by Bobby Coveto. German sailor Simone Bartmann won the ladies division. Filipino windsurfer Leah Bautista placed 2nd and Diane Kolaritsch from Canada was third. /MPmailto:madyaas_pen@yahoo.com
