Swine Raising Seminar

One of the activities during Aklan’s 53rd Foundation Day anniversary was Swine Basic Manage-ment and Animal Health Seminar on April 25, 2009 held at NVC Gymnasium. The speaker was a veterinary specialist, Dr. Eugene Mende. He gave appropriate and assuring method of hog raising.

The program was coordinated by the Aklan Provincial Veterinary Office in cooperation with Philippines Chamber of Commerce, Aklan Chapter. B-MEG of San Miguel Corporation sponsored the seminar which gives service to several barangays of the country with veterinary missions.

In hog raising, the target breed and weight are highly presented in the program. Backyard and farm raising livestock vary in some of its steps of operation but there are similarities in the proper care of them. The number of piglets of a successful hog raiser must be not less than seven (7) per birth. Twelve piglets are considered normal too. Twenty is much and incapable for well growth.

Frequent feeding of them contributes to their fast growth. Timely breeding and the type of boar being used for breeding contribute greatly and naturally to ideal piglets. The quality and balance of food to hogs in combination with leftover in households for backyard raising leads also to healthy results and profitable to a caretaker. Those are some standardized rules in raising hogs given by Dr. Mende.

It is hard to cure the diseases, better prevent it. Disease causes low income to hog raisers. The cause of those problems according to Dr. Mende is that the Philippines is an open country wherein breeds of different kinds are brought in for breeding and consumption. (by MABETH ROWAN) /MP
