Black Seed Bug Threat To Rice


A 2-day briefing on technology method demonstration on hybrid rice for the technical personnel of the Department of Agriculture was held recently at Iloilo Grand Hotel, Iloilo City. The briefing aimed to ensure a well-managed rice production during the coming wet season planting.

According to Manuel Olanday, regional rice coordinator, the briefing will improve the performance of the technical personnel on hybrid rice production. The participants identified,   discussed the activities, and finalized the sites for the method demonstrations of hybrid rice. 

For the integrated pest management or biological control, Ms. Ylimea Olanday, regional IPM coordinator, gave the information on black seed bug considered the latest threat to rice production. It was discovered last year in Dimasalang, Masbate and quickly spread to Regions 7 and 8. It can damage up to 50 percent of the production.  During the techno demo session, varietal characteristics and specific production technologies of the different hybrid rice were presented by Agritech, Pioneer, Bayer and Philrice.

Last year, the area planted to hybrid rice in Western Visayas  is 11,765 hectares with a total  production of 2,371 mt.,  with 4.96 mt. average yield per hectare. /MP
