SP Approves Ibajay Marine Sanctuaries Establishment

The Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Aklan approved Resolution No. 054, S., 2013, which will authorize the establishment of 260.6 hectares of fishery and marine sanctuaries in barangays Bugtongbato, Aquino and Ondoy, Ibajay, Aklan.
 
The resolution was appoved during the 7th Regular Session of the provincial legislative body on August 22, 2013.  Ibajay Ordinance No. 179, Series of 2012 establishing the Aquino-Ondoy Marine Fish Sanctuary and Ordinance No. 182, Series of 2013 establishing the Bugtongbato Marine Fish Sanctuary are approved.
 
The Aquino-Ondoy Marine Fish Sanctuary is of 116 hectares of corals and 6.4 hectares of mangroves in the territorial nautical boundary of barangays Aquino and Ondoy.  The sanctuary core zone is of 72.2 hectares in shoals 2 and 3.
 
The 138.2-hectare Bugtongbato Marine Fish Sanctuary and Fishery Reserve is composed of the 62.4-hectare Pangayawan Reef, the 20.7-hectare Bugtongbato near shore coral, the 10.9-hectare seagrass bed and a mangrove area of 44.21 hectares in the Katunggan it Ibajay.
 
The ordinance prohibits any fishing activity or aquaculture operation, gathering or collection of any fishery resource, swimming or snorkelling activity, mooring and passing of boats except during periods of bad weather and emergency.  /MP
