Entrepreneurial Farmer

Ambrosio R. Villorente
Recognizing Women Agriculturists
The Department of Agriculture (DA) has recognized 24 Outstanding Women in 2008 for their achievements in "Advancing the Cause of Agriculture". Of the 24, some nine (9) women are national awardees while 15 are regional awardees.
However, in Region VI, comprising the provinces of Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Gui-maras, Iloilo and Negros Occidental, DA did not recognize any woman outstanding agriculture. What a neglect on the part of the DA!
In the words of Agriculture Sec. Arthur Yap, the award is a recognition to the outstanding achievements of women farmer in agriculture production. But DA officials and personnel in Region VI did not see any woman whose contribution to the field of agriculture is outstanding. DA Region VI forgot that two current chairpersons in the Provincial Agriculture and Fishery Council are women, the provincial agriculturist of Capiz and two DA asst. directors are women.
If the DA Region VI officials and staff members visited the farms, they must have seen and recognized outstanding contributions of women farmers and fisherfolks to advance agriculture and fishery productivity. DA Region VI recognized no outstanding woman agriculturist./MP
