RC Kalibo Calls for Donations Now for “Ondoy” Victims

Residents clamber on electric wires to stay out of floodwaters while others wade neck-deep in Cainta Rizal, east of Manila .

A boy is lifted onto the roof of a building to escape the flooding in the Quezon City Metro Manila. Nearly a month's worth of rain fell in just six hours Saturday, triggering the worst flooding in the Philippine capital in 42 years, which stranded thousands on rooftops in the city and elsewhere.

As of Tuesday, Sept. 29, some 246 were accounted dead as victims of tropical storm "Ondoy" that hit Metro Manila on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009.
Moreover, some 32 persons are still missing. Since Monday, Sept. 28, there are no classes in Metro Manila and other provinces in Luzon ravaged by "Ondoy". Food, medical supplies, clothing, toiletress and other basic necessities were distributed to the flood victims. However, relief goods distributed are very inadequate that the government and other charitable institutions are requesting people with kind hearts to donate clothes, food ready to eat, medicine, bottled water, blankets for distribution to the flood victims.

In Kalibo, Archt. Joel Mercurio, president of the Rotary Club of Kalibo has called upon its members to donate clothing and cash for the typhoon victims in Metro Manila. The call has gained favorable response from the members. Archt Mercurio is calling upon the good people of Aklan to course through their donations for typhoon victims in Metro Manila.

Mr. Victor Reyes, branch manager of the Philippine Airlines in Kalibo has assured Mercurio that PAL is ready to airlift donations for typhoon victims in Metro Manila without any cost or for free. Reyes however suggested that the donation or relief goods must be addressed to an organization which will be able to distribute the relief goods. Shipments addressed to an individual are not accepted.
Dr. Raphy M. Tayco, secretary, Rotary Club of Kalibo recalled during their weekly meeting how people of Metro Manila assisted typhoon Frank’s victims after the June 21, 2008 floods of mud and water in Kalibo and Numancia, Aklan. /MP
