ASU Trains Bayan Anihan at GK Site


Banga, Aklan – The Aklan State University (ASU), through the Extension and Community Services (ECS) Unit of the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Environmental Sciences (CAFES) in partnership with the Couples for Christ (CFC) Banga Chapter, conducted the Bayan Anihan (BA) Power of 5 and Com-munity Training at the Gawad Kalinga (GK) Site in Barangay Fatima, New Washington, Aklan on December 16, 2009.

The activity was the first community-based training in the GK Site in Region VI. Some 36 GK residents, six (6) ASU Faculty members, eight (8) BS Agriculture students, two (2) LGU re-presentatives ( MAO and AT) and three trainors from the University participated in the training.
The training included six modules. Module 1 - BA Orientation; Module 2 - BA Core Values; Module 3 - Farm Model; Module 4 – Ten (10) Square-Meter Plot; Module 5 - Production Technology; and Module 6 - How to Manage BA Farms. Prof. Rogelio L. Felizardo presented Module 1 and 3; Dr. Lelisa J. Teodosio discussed Modules 2 and 6; while Dr. Evelyn P. Vedasto explained Modules 4 and 5. The actual field layout of the 10 sq. m. plot for the three mixes (Sinigang Mix A, Sinigang Mix B and Pinakbet) was demonstrated by the trainors, which was followed by participants’ hands-on experience on how to layout the plot in preparation for planting of three vegetable mixes in the 1,000 square meters garden.

Region VI GK Coordinator, Bro. Sem Dagu-ob and Bro. Rey Balatayo, In-Charge of the GK Visayas and Mindanao clusters enthusiastically graced the activity. They both gave inspirational messages and challenges to the participants, who would be the clienteles of the program. The two key officials of GK appreciated and thanked the efforts for the first BA initially launched in GK Fatima Site.

The Power of 5 was also named during the training. Project Director (PD) was represented by Bro. Geovanni Relator of CFC Banga Chapter; BA Officer coming from the GK residents, the KB President Bro. Cerilo Arguilles, Municipal Agricultural Officer Edwin Rome (LGU NW), and ASU Faculty and Students were represented by Prof. Eleuterio Guarino and Mr. Victorio de Joseph, respectively.
