DepEd Makato Holds District Remedial Reading Training

by MELROSE B. HIWATIG

The Department of Education–Makato held a District Echo Remedial Reading Training at Makato Integrated School (MIS) on August 3, 2011. All school heads and Remedial Reading teachers from all public elementary and secondary schools of Makato participated.

The training aimed to improve the knowledge and skills of teachers in organizing and conducting remedial reading classes. The Kindergarten teachers from the district also participated in the said training considering their position in the formation of foundational learning of pre-schoolers.

Mrs. Lourdes V. Tesoro, Principal II of the MIS welcomed the guests and participants during the opening program. Mrs. Kenneth B. Revister, Public Schools District Supervisor in her message stressed the importance of remedial reading classes to improve the reading ability of pupils who have difficulty in it, reading being the basis of learning for all subject areas. Pupils and students who have difficulty in reading are missing the joys and opportunities that reading affords an individual in general. Mrs. Elma F. Ginoy, the District English Coordinator, gave the orientation on raining dynamics to the participants.

The following topics are discussed: 1. Principles of Diagnosis by Mrs. Loly T. Ordas, Elementary Reading Teacher; 2. Observation Survey and Demonstration by Mrs. Elma F. Ginoy, District English Coor-dinator; 3. Making Support Instructional Materials by Mr. Neil P. Delgado, Principal I of Baybay-Alibagon; Reading Strategies by Mrs. Lourdes V. Tesoro, Principal II of MIS; 5. Remediation, Intervention/Corrective Measures by Mr. Melvin D. Serrano, Head Teacher of Anselmo B. Legaspi National High School; and 6. Local Reading Materials by Mrs. Kenneth B. Revestir, Schools District Supervisor.

A review of the Fuller Lesson, one of the materials used in teaching reading to grade I pupils in public elementary schools was conducted by Mrs. Hazel T. Tesoro, Master Teacher I of MIS.

Mrs. Kenneth B. Revestir, Schools District Supervisor, talked on Planning for School Remedial Reading Program. He challenged and inspired all school heads and remedial reading teachers to make a difference in the lives of their pupils and students particularly to those who have been left behind by their peers in reading ability.

As a culmination of the 2-day training, all the School Heads together with the Remedial Reading teachers, were required to come up with a Remedial Reading Action Plan for their respective schools. It is hoped that this program will make an impact on concerned pupils and students in line with the DepEd’s commitment to provide quality education. /MP
