Kalibo Officials Hold Information Drive On Martyrs and Patriots

by TERENCE T. TORIANO

"Just the way that they smile when they found out that there are great Aklanons who gave up their lives and their personal happiness for their country is enough for us to say we’ve done our part," said SB Member Mark Quimpo, Chair on Education and Cultural Oversight Committee, observing the response of the students during the information drive conducted at Gen. Francisco Del Castillo Memorial Elementary School in Mabilo, Kalibo, Aklan.

The group storyteller, SB member Emmanuel Soviet Russia Dela Cruz, pointed out "even some of the teachers and parents forgot a few of the basic facts in history where great Aklanons are involved such as the very first Katipuneros outside Luzon, the XIX Martyrs; the first Filipino Archbishop of the Catholic Church, Gabriel Reyes; the second Filipino Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Victorino Mapa, the first Commandant of the famed Philippine Military Academy; the Prince of the Church who fought the Marcos Regime and influenced the People Power Revolution, Jaime Cardinal Sin."

There are eight private and public schools in the elementary, secondary and college levels that already benefited in the information drive last week as the Month of Remembering Akeanon Martyrs and Patriots continues this March.

SB Member Lillian Tirol stated that the purpose of the group is to educate the children and make them proud of their history and culture as instructed by Mayor Raymar Rebaldo by virtue of an Executive Order.
More schools are set to be visited by the group as the need to educate the students regarding their local heroes becomes more pressing since most begin to forget about their heritage.

Along with the group is SK Federation Chair Mary Agnes Jesm Gallardo, staff of both the IT Unit and Tourism Services of the Mayor’s Office, and this writer. /MP
