As the country observes the International Women’s Day and the month of March as Women’s Month, the Men Opposed to VAW (Violence Against Women) Everywhere, Inc. –Aklan Chapter, paid tribute to the Aklanon women who continue to pursue and bring significant contributions to Aklan’s development.
The women’s month is an opportune time for all to pay tribute to our mothers, wives, sisters, girl-friends and girl-children in Aklan as these women continue to struggle for their rights and empowerment according to Franklin Quimpo, MOVE, Inc. – Aklan president.
Quimpo noted that women’s rights continue to be violated as rising incidence of violence against women and children (VAWC) persist. The Women and Children Protection Section (WCPS) of the Aklan PNP states that reported cases in 2008 reached 378 for women and 150 for children.
From January to February this year, 57 VAW cases are already reported and 17 for children. The alarming reports show that everyone should continue to speak out and oppose violence against women and children. MOVE –Aklan will be in the forefront to raise awareness and call the attention of men who are primarily the perpetrators to oppose and stop violence against women and children in Aklan.
In Aklan’s Women’s Day celebration on March 11, MOVE joined all stakeholders in this important event to highlight this year’s theme:" Babae, Yaman ka ng Bayan". MOVE is encouraging, empowering, inspiring and supporting men in valuing women as equals to eliminate gender based violence against women and children in the locality.
The provincial government of Aklan through the Aklan Gender and Development Com-mission (AGADCC) had lined up various activities to highlight women’s role in the province. In line with this, MOVE facilitated men’s health concerns through a free check up for selected males with prostate problems on March 12, at the Daeangpan it mga Kababayenan. /MP
