Aklan Eyes P3M on 2010 Product Showcase


The provincial government of Aklan eyes a P3-million revenue from its 8th Product Showcase in SM City-Iloilo from Nov. 15 to 21.

Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)–Aklan Provincial Director Diosdado Cadena said the target sale from this year’s event is around P3 million. Last’s year’s sale, including orders from bulk buyers, was around P 2.87 million, he added.

According to the DTI provincial director, at least 31 micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) have joined in this year’s presentation.

Cadena said, "the Aklan Product Showcase has been boosting the MSMEs in Aklan as well as providing employment to communities. The DTI continues to find buyers and potential investors for the products of Aklan since the annual showcase started in 2002", Cadena added.

Engineer Roger Esto, Aklan provincial planning and development officer and representing Aklan Gov. Carlito Marquez at the opening ceremonies on Monday last week said, the yearly activity has also been a venue for promoting indigenous materials and local talents.

The weeklong event showcased the various products of Aklan, including engineered bamboos, bayong, furniture, processed meat, special delicacies, as well as handmade paper crafts, clay-based and nito products, and piña cloth.

The theme for the 8th Aklan Product Showcase 2010 is "E Edition" with E standing for engineered, eco-friendly and elegant.

The event is sponsored by the Hugod Aklanon Producers Association Inc. and DTI, in partnership with the provincial government of Aklan.

DTI Aklan Exports Piña Cloth

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) – Aklan is eyeing major exports of piña cloth and fiber abroad.

DTI – Aklan provincial director Diosdado Cadena said that piña cloth and fiber are rapidly gaining recognition abroad through several national product showcase and fashion events.

Director Cadena said that many foreign companies have already ordered piña cloth from Aklan. Some fashion companies are sending their representatives to buy and ship bulk orders of piña cloth every year, he said. Most of these are from companies in Japan, United States and Europe, added Cadena.

Cadena said, "we are protecting the quality of the piña fiber industry through the Aklan Product seal. He stressed that the seal proves that the piña cloths have passed the quality standards set by the DTI and its stakeholders. Moreover, the Aklan piña fiber has experienced sudden growth, and increasing orders from bulk buyers and potential investors for more than 10 years. (PNA) /MP
