The association has been recognized for its annual Ati-atihan celebration. The 2011 e dition will be held on January 8.

Mayor Robertson described the Ati-Atihan event in Vancouver as spectacular and culturally unique. In 2009, he issued a proclamation declaring the second Saturday of January as Ati-atihan Day in Vancouver. The proclamation recognizes the growing role and strength of the Filipino-Aklanon community in Vancouver’s multi-racial and multi-cultural fabric.

"This Mardi Gras event organized by the Aklanon Sto. Niño Association of Canada is not only an opportunity for Filipinos to come together, enjoy a festive musical evening and welcome the New Year, but also a chance to showcase and preserve Filipino culture," the mayor stressed in his proclamation.

The provincial govern-ment believes that the benevolent act of Mayor Robertson deserves to be reciprocated and be known in the province of Aklan. Hence, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan under the leadership of Vice Governor Gabrielle V. Calizo-Quimpo approved a resolution thanking the Vancouver, British Columbia mayor for proclaiming January 10, 2009 as Ati-Atihan Day. /MP
