The campaign against illegal firecrackers of the government agencies in Aklan was so effective. As of January 3, the Aklan Police Provincial Office (APPO) has recorded only two victims of firecracker injuries in Aklan.
In a radio interview over a local radio station in Kalibo, Police Sr. Supt. Samuel Nacion, Deputy Provincial Director for Administration, APPO, said the two victims are both from Kalibo. They only suffered minor firecracker injuries.
Supt. Nacion said the very significant decrease in the number of firecracker victims in Aklan for this year shows that the campaign made collectively by government agencies like the Department of Health (DOH), Philippine National Police (PNP), Department of Education (DepEd), Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the Provincial Health Office (PHO) was very effective that resulted to a very small number of firecracker victims.
For the New Year celebration, the DOH and other concerned agencies campaigned strongly against letting children light firecrackers, with the theme "Ilayo sa Disgrasya ang Kabataan, Walang Batang Mag papaputok".
Meanwhile, the PNP is now investigating the case of a minor in Manhanip, Malinao, Aklan, who was hit in the elbow by a stray bullet allegedly coming from a Caliber 45 gun.
The bullet, according to Supt. Nacion, was already sent to the PNP Crime Laboratory for examination.
The incident reportedly happened at the height of the New Year revelry. (Venus G. Villanueva)
