Flamboyant International Boxing Federation (IBF) minimum-weight titlist Florante “The Little Pacquiao” Condes will finally defend his title against International Boxing Organization (IBO) minimum-weight champion Nkosinathi Joyi in a unification title fight on May 31, 2008 at the Emperors Palace Casino, Kempton Park, Gauteng, South Africa.
Reputed as “Filipino killer”, the unbeaten 25-year-old Joyi has scored 13 knockouts in 17 wins.
Two of his stoppage victims were Filipinos Arman De la Cruz (KO 2) and Gabriel Pumar (KO 1), all in IBO world championship duels.
The 27-year-old Condes, who is now managed by Dante Ortiz, last fought on July 7, 2007 when he grabbed the IBF bauble from Indon phenom Muhammad Rachman via split decision at the Studio TV RCTI in Jakarta, Indonesia.
The diminutive Condes (22-3, 20 KOs) had been pencilled to defend his crown in Manila in a rematch with Rachman but the card did not materialize after several postponements.
After a falling out with his former manger Aljoe Jaro, Condes was reported to have signed a contract to fight in Mexico early this year until the offer to fight Joyi came. /MP
