A Symposium on Ecological Solid Waste Management, DevCom program of the Northwestern Visayan Colleges, mass communication students, co-sponsored by the General Services Office LGU-Kalibo, the tri-media, the Philippine Army, and Aklan Medical Society; PsciJournalist Aklan Chapter; and the Bread & Butter Bake Shop was held at Purok 2, C. Laserna St., Kalibo, Aklan. Kool Earth is an environmentalist group from Philippine League of Government and Private Midwives, Inc., Aklan Chapter.
Republic Act 9003 otherwise known as the ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 is considered a broad-based, comprehensive and appropriate solid waste management which involves segregation at source, segregated transportation, storage, transfer, processing, treatment, and disposal of solid waste and all other waste management activities which do not harm the environment. The participants discussed how to segregate wastes into compostable, non-recyclable and special or hazardous waste.
Engr. Rogelio dela Cruz Purok 2 leader, expressed elation that the NVC MassCom students has chosen Purok 2 to respond to the challenge for the successful implementation of this program. Mayor Raymar A. Rebaldo affirmed the continued support of his administration on this program.
Mr. Mario D. Balandra, NVC MassCom Dept. Head, gave the rationale of the program. Mrs. Editha Ignacio–de Lemos, General Services Officer (LGU-Kalibo) discussed clearly the introduction to Ecological Solid Waste Management. Ms. Adorada T. Reynaldo, GSO Admin/Supply officer explained the approaches to ecological solid waste management, waste avoidance and the benefits and uses of compost through a power point presentation.
Dr. Cynthia C. dela Cruz, president of Aklan Medical Society and Kool Earth, discussed the topic on health benefits. Mr. Gary Vargas and Jun Aguirre, PsciJorn officers, facilitated the open forum. Hon. Mary Jane A. Rebaldo, Punong Barangay of Poblacion, Kalibo gave her closing message. The signing of Manifesto of Support by the participants followed. /MP
