Dela Hoya’s Former KO Victim Has Cancer

Former World Boxing Council (WBC) super featherweight champion Genaro “Chicanito” Hernandez has been diagnosed with cancer and the WBC is spearheading the campaign to help the former boxer whose only two career losses were inflicted by Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Hernandez (38-2, 17 KOs), retired after losing an 8th round TKO to Mayweather for WBC super featherweight championship in Las Vegas on Oct. 3, 1998.
He suffered a brutal 6th round stoppage loss in a failed bid to capture Oscar De La Hoya’s World Boxing Organization (WBO) lightweight title on Sept. 9, 1995 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
A press statement from the WBC said World Boxing Cares chairperson Jill Diamond is asking the boxing community to join WBCares and the World Boxing Council in helping Genaro “Chicanito” Hernandez, a former world champion and dear friend who is in need of assistance.
Jill sent the following information: “Our beloved WBC world champion Genaro Hernandez is facing the fight of his life. Diagnosed with a rare cancer, his insurance will not cover his full treatment. The World Boxing Council, and our President Jose Sulaiman, urge you to join us in Genaro’s corner.

Marquez Launches Aklan Re-greening
and Beautification Project

The Province of Aklan launched on Friday morning, November 28, 2008 the “Aklan Re-greening and Beautification” project in a simple ceremonies held in Godofredo P. Ramos Park, Provincial Capitol, Kalibo, Aklan. The project started at six o’clock in the morning with province-wide community cleaning and tree planting by the community people.
Aklan Re-greening and Beautification project is a simple planting of trees along both sides of the roads, taking care of the trees planted and cleaning the areas. The project is fully supported by the provincial government to vigorously promote tourism program, maintain clean air, and help prevent global warming and climate change as pointed out by Governor Carlito S. Marquez.
Early in the morning of Friday, November 28, Governor Marquez and his team went around Aklan to observe the community participation to the said re-greening and beautification project. At 8:00 o’clock in the morning, Marquez with Congressman Florencio T. Miraflores, Vice Gov. Billie V. Calizo led in the simple launching ceremonies of the project in Godofredo P. Ramos Park. One highlight to the program is the turn over of cash subsidy and garden tools to the participating barangays and participants in the re-greening and beautification program.
One of the motivations for the participation to the project is the holding of re-greening and beautification contest among the barangays of Aklan as one group and residential owners for another.
Winners in the barangay category and residential owners will be awarded plaques and cash. Barangay awards are: First prize – P100,000; second prize – P75,000; and third prize – P50,000. Residential awards are: First prize – P30,000; second prize – P20,000; and third prize – P10,000. /MP
Fits Nabas and Ibajay ReceiveICT Equipment
The Municipalities of Nabas and Ibajay, Aklan acquired Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Equipment. The Philippine Council for Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCARRD) through the Western Visayas Agriculture Resources Research and Development Consortium (WESVARRDEC) turned over a set of desktop computer (CPU, monitor, UPS, mouse, keyboard and 3 in 1 printer), and a cellular phone to FITS Nabas and Ibajay last month. The said ICT equipment was turned over by the Regional Management Information System (RMIS) staff, Mr. Carl Hiponia together with Mr. Alan Rey Hiponia of Passi City and the Techno Gabay Coordinator of WESVARRDEC.
Dr. Anna Mae C. Relingo. Hon. Romeo Dalisay, Municipal Mayor of Nabas and Mr. Basilio Mationg, Municipal Agriculture Officer (MAO) received the equipment in the presence of Dr. Lelisa J. Teodosio, representative from the FITS Partner Member Agency (PMA), the Aklan State University.
On the other hand, FITS Ibajay received the equipment through Hon. Salvador Maagma, SB member and Chairman of Committee on Agriculture and the MAO, Mrs. Caridad Reyes. The Agriculture staff of both municipalities were present during the turn over ceremony held in the FITS Centers.
It was also learned from the WESVA-RRDEC officials that a digital camera will be turned over later. The camera will be used by the FITS Centers to document the activities being undertaken by the centers.
The Techno Gabay Coordinator explained to the FITS Centers staff and other stakeholders that the purpose of the ICT equipment is for data content build up and for the farmers to have access on information and technology needed in their farming activities, since it will be provided with interconnectivity. Moreover, other clients who would want to avail of any information regarding the topics they would like to know of are also welcome to use the equipment. The equipment will also be used in the production and/or reproduction of IEC materials for use by the farmers and other stakeholders./MMT, RACO Rep. /MP
