First Enterprises Survey In Aklan Starts

The first-ever Survey of Enterprises in the Philippines (SEP) is being conducted. The National Statistics Office (NSO) started the survey this August 2012. It will cover 76 samples in Aklan to complement the 7,772 total samples of enterprises all throughout the country, announced Blas Solidum, Aklan Provincial Statistics Officer.

An enterprise refers to the smallest legal unit producing goods or services, which benefits from certain degree of autonomy in decision-making, especially for the allocation of its current resources. It carries out one or more activities at one or more locations.

The 2011 SEP aims to collect financial data and other information to derive indicators on output, gross fixed capital formation and value added to improve the compilation of the Philippine System of National Accounts (PSNA). Related key economic indicators will be gathered for macro-economic planning, policy formulation and decision-making by the government and private sectors.

This survey is a response to the recommendations of United Nations Statistics Division to countries to adopt the 2008 System of National Accounts (SNA) for international comparability.

The SEP data will be used in the preparation of the Philippine System of National Accounts in accordance with the 1993/2008 SNA for the generation of production and income account in the computation of gross domestic product for financial and non-financial sectors.

According to Solidum, the data from SEP will enable both the NSO and NSCB to improve the PSNA. It will, by accurately, capture variables on gross fixed capital formation, corporate pro-fit and value added for a more accurate picture of the Philippine economy on a timely basis.

The data at the enterprise level will provide a better understanding of the behavior and new ways businesses are being organized and operated in the global economy.

To ensure the efficiency and accuracy of data collection, Solidum appealed to respondents of sample enterprises to support and cooperate with NSO field personnel by giving complete and reliable information thru the survey questionnaires provided them.

He assured respondents that all information furnished to NSO will be held “strictly confidential”. It cannot be used for taxation, investigation or for other law enforcement purposes. /MP
