The image of Nuestro Jesus Nazarene of Quiapo, Manila, arrived in Roxas City August l8 on its way to the municipality of Sapian, Capiz, courtesy of the family of Sapian Mayor Arturo “Turic” Orosco and wife Evangeline Onas. We learned that this is the third time that the icon of the Black Nazarene of Quiapo is brought to Sapian town some 27 km. southwest of Roxas City during the birthday celebration of Mayor Orosco.
This writer who is a Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, once served as member of the Honor Guards that welcomed and escorted the Black Nazarene from Roxas City to Sapian town in one of its previous visits to Capiz on request of Mayor Orosco.
The parishioners of Saint Anne Parish of Sapian town had been very devoted to the image of the Black Nazarene since the ascendancy of Mayor Orosco as chief executive of Sapian town.
Greenest LGU
The municipality of Sapian during the mayorship of Mrs. Remedios Onas, mother in-law of Mayor Orosco, was adjudged three times regional and national awardee in the search for the cleanest and greenest LGU under the Gawad Pangulo Sa Kapaligiran (GPK) program of the government.
While in Sapian town the Nuestro Jesus Nazarene image, the devoted parishioners from neighboring towns in Capiz will be visiting. Some people believed that by touching the Black Nazarene, they are cured of their sickness. If unable to touch during procession, they hurled towels or handkerchiefs to the marshalls guarding the image with the request to wipe these on the statue of the Black Nazarene hoping for the miraculous powers attributed to it.
Last August 26 the image of Black Nazarene was back in the city from Sapian town where it was brought to the Immaculate Conception Metropolitan Cathedral on its way back to Manila.
Mayor Orosco conveyed his thanks to all those who assisted in the arrival and departure honors given to Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno de Quiapo, a life-sized, dark-colored, wooden sculpture of Jesus Christ carrying a cross believed to be miraculous by many Filipino devotees.
