April 19–25 Is Aklan Press Freedom Week


The Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) of Aklan approved Resolution No. 2010 – 046 which declared "April 19 – 25 this Year and Every Year Thereafter As Aklan Press Freedom Week in the Province of Aklan".

The said resolution was unanimously approved by the SP during its 8th Regular Session held on March 4, 2010 in the SP Session Hall, Provincial Capitol, Kalibo, Aklan. Mr. Odon S. Bandiola, SP Secretary certified to it’s correctness. Vice Gov. Gabrielle V. Calizo-Quimpo attested it and Gov. Carlito S. Marquez approved it.

According to the Resolution, the Province of Aklan celebrates Aklan Day every April 25 of each year, the day Aklan got its administrative autonomy by virtue of RA 1414. Moreover, administrative autonomy was granted with the active advocacy of Aklan media that convinced our political leaders which led to the approval of the law separating Aklan as a distinct province from Capiz.

Moreover, the practicing journalists of Aklan, following ethical principles of journalism united themselves to work for the approval of this Resolution to officially declare press freedom week in Aklan.

According to the Resolution, this weeklong observance of Press Freedom week will feature forum on media ethics, photo exhibits, symposium on media works, film showing, fun games and socials. The participants will come from Aklan media outlets like television, radio and newspapers.

As the Resolution states, Aklan’s struggle to restore Aklan’s independence is directly related and similar to every journalist’s aspiration for genuine freedom in the exercise of journalism profession. /MP
