Villar, Roxas Top UP Diliman Mock Elections

Sen. Manny Villar of the Nacionalista Party topped the third and final leg of the UP Alpha Sigma Fraternity’s Boto ng Iskolar ng Bayan: UP Mock Election Series 2009-2010.

Villar garnered 2,866 votes or 33.8 percent of the total votes cast by 8,468 students in 25 colleges in UP Diliman in what the organization proclaims as by far the largest mock elections held in the campus. The university has a total of 22,597 students in its Diliman campus.

The NP standard bearer bested Liberal Party’s Sen. Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino by 12.7 percentage points after the latter placed second with 1,787 votes or 21.1 percent of the total number of respondents.

Sen. Richard Gordon placed third with 1,317 votes or 15.5 percent.

Former Defense Secretary Gilbert "Gibo" Teodoro, who topped the last mock election, placed fourth with 646 votes or 7.6 percent of all those who participated in the mock elections.

According to the organizers, the question asked was, "If elections were held today, who would you vote for president and vice president?"

Villar is an alumnus of UP Diliman, particularly in the College of Business Administration where he earned his bachelor and master’s degrees.

In the first leg of the Mock Elections held last September 2009, Villar placed second while he placed third in the December 2009 Mock Elections.

The mock elections were held from March 2 to 16, 2010.

In the race for Vice President, Senator Mar Roxas was the runaway lead with a commanding 2918 or 34.46 percent of the total votes, topping MMDA Chairman Bayani Fernando who came in second with 1262 or 14.90 percent of the total respondents.

Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay came in third with 907 or 10.71 percent of the votes, while Senator Loren Legarda came in fourth with 673 or 7.95 percent of the votes.

The organizers of the mock elections also asked those who participated in the polls to indicate if they were registered voters or not. After the tally, a total of 5,893 said they were registered voters.

Among the registered voters, Villar still topped the mock elections with 2451 or 28.94 percent of the votes, followed by Aquino with 1611 or 19.02 percent of those who participated.

In the vice presidential race, Roxas again emerged as the victor among registered voters with 2550 or 30.11 percent of the votes, followed by Fernando with 922 or 11.71 percent of the votes.

The fraternity made use of stratified random sampling in determining the veracity of the results, and in order to ensure its scientific accuracy in the open voting system. This time around there were 378 participants, in accordance to the population sample drawn out by the mathematical formula derived from the total population of the Diliman Campus segregated per college. Out of the said 378 participants, the fraternity spearheaded the scientific analysis by straw polling method and extracted the participants for the survey making use of the said statistical method With nationalism as one of the fraternity’s highest goals, this series of mock elections sought to heighten the awareness of the UP Diliman community of the importance of exercising the right to suffrage for the upcoming 2010 national elections.

By virtue of the marked and substantial increase of the voters who actively participated in this year’s elections, and the impact of the activity on the national consciousness, the UP Alpha Sigma Fraternity has once again captured the active interest of the UP students, and tapped into their collective abilities to become catalysts of humanitarian service to the Filipino people.

(If the Filipino voters possessed the characteristics interest, and concerns of the UP Diliman students, this result of mock election series is a reliable predictor who will be the president and vice president of the Philippines beginning July 1, 2010.) /MP
