John Doe Mauls Newspaper Publisher

Newspaper publisher Lemuel T. Fernandez of The Daily Guardian was mauled by two suspects outside his office on Wednesday night, January 26, along MH del Pilar St., Brgy. Taal, Molo, Iloilo City past 9 o’clock in the evening.

Fernandez, according to Atty. Dennis Ventilacion, former legal counsel of The Daily Guardian, was about to board his service vehicle after working in his office in Brgy. Taal, Molo district, when he was mauled by unidentified suspects. Fernandez shouted for help causing his assailants to panic and run away. However, Fernandez sustained a lacerated wound in the right portion of his head. He is still confined at St. Paul’s Hospital, Iloilo City.

Police Regional Office 6 Director Chief Superintendent Cipriano E. Querol, Jr. immediately created Task Force Guardian to conduct an investigation to identify and arrest the suspects.

The task force is counting on the possibility that the attack against Fernandez is work-related because of some sensitive issues that his newspaper has published.

Querol is also assigning at least two uniformed personnel as temporary escorts for Fernandez. The culprit are still unidentified.

Elena Pabilona of Radyo Ng Bayan and head of The Iloilo Capitol Press Corps visited Fernandez in his hospital bed. She condemns the mauling incident after visiting Fernandez. (PNA) /MP
