Aklan Celebrates Tourism Week With Prov’l Inter-School Quiz Bee

As highlight of Tourism Week, the Aklan Tourism Officers Association (AkTOA) led by its chairman, Hon. Josephine I. Iquina in partnership with Aklan Provincial Tourism Office (APTO) led by co-chairman Vicky Ramos Antonino spearheaded the tourism week-long celebration held on September 24 – 29, 2012. The celebration showcased and promoted tourism attractions in Aklan. It was also held to promote better appreciation of tourism potentials of Aklan and understanding its benefits. Aklan being the site of the No. 1 tourist resort destination – Boracay Island, has more to offer in addition to Boracay.


Another highlight of the week-long celebration is the Inter-school tourism quiz bee, in partnership with the Aklan Press Club, Inc. held on September 24, 2012 at the ABL Sporst complex, Capitol Site, Kalibo, Aklan. The tourism quiz bee was participated by eight (8) schools/colleges with tourism related subjects/courses namely: Aklan State University of Banga, New Washington and Ibajay campuses, STI Colllege, Aklan Catholic College, Altavas College, Northwestern Visayan Colleges and Garcia College of Technology.  

The contest aimed to open the minds of our students who are enrolled in Tourism/HRM courses in colleges to embed in them the culture of tourism in Aklan. 

Each college sent one team of three students participants with individualized scoring and questions from easy to average and difficult. 

After the contest, the following are lucky to win: Champion– STI College; 1st Runner up – ASU-New Washington; and 2nd Runner up – Altavas College. Special awards are: 1. Best Performing School – STI College, and 2. Best Performing Student – Esrah Jims B. Gutierrez. The winners were awarded cash prizes, certificates and medals by the Provincial Tourism Office and Aklan Tourism Officers Association. 

Door prizes of gift certificates and food products were given by Trims, Baligyaan and Marzon’s Hotel. The major prize from Cebu Pacific, a roundtrip plane ticket for Kalibo-Davao-Kalibo went to John Alfred R. Asis, a BS HRM year I student of the Aklan State University, New Washington. Megs S. Lunn, Aklan Press Club, Inc president, acted as quiz master. 

Prior to the quiz bee, a tourism forum was held centered on the Tourism Trends and Prospects with Atty. John Orola, Jr. as guest of honor and speaker. Orola is the chairman of the West Visayan Regional Tourism Association and Bacolod City Tourism Council. /MP
