ERC Dispels Fears Of Drastic Electricity Price Increases

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) dispelled fears of drastic electricity price increases and assured the general public that consumer interest will be protected in view of the reported high prices in the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM).
The assurance was made by the ERC in the light of a commentary in the opinion column of one of the major dailies dated 21 May 2007. "The ERC carefully reviews all applications for rate adjustments and makes sure that no rate shock will occur in those cases where an adjustment is warranted.
The ERC also monitors the behavior of the market participants in the WESM, including the National Power Corporation (NPC), to check if anti-competitive acts are committed.
The ERC is looking at the allegations on the supposed actions of certain NPC officials, which resulted to the high prices in the WESM, to determine if there is sufficient ground to prosecute them for anti-competitive behavior," ERC Chairman Rodolfo B. Albano, Jr. stressed. /MP
