Tourism, Agriculture Remain Top Priorities

By ULYSSES ESPARTERO
Tourism and agriculture remain the two major priorities in the executive agenda of re-elected Governor Carlito Samson Marquez
Marquez who was the official candidate of LAKAS-CMD under the banner of local party Tibyog Akean was re-elected in tandem with Congressman Florencio "Joeben" Tumbocon-Miraflores in the May 14 local election.
During his first term as Governor of Aklan, Marquez saw it fit to zealously develop Aklan’s agri-industrial capabilities to complement the booming eco-tourism industry. Marquez claimed he has not failed in his mission for he has brought about the balanced progress in both the rural and urban centers in Aklan.
Since 2004 when he first assumed leadership of Aklan, he consistently pursued the provincial development programs with other major thrusts.
These concerns have remained the same although development strategies have varied somehow.
Marquez has specifically sought the development of agriculture, natural resources and the environment for greater productivity. He prioritized eco-tourism making Boracay Island an anchor destination of the national tourism industry.
Viewing the tourism industry as the saving grace in global recession, Marquez harnessed the province’s resources and galvanized the private sector’s participation to work doubly in promoting Aklan as a viable tourist destination. With provincial program on sustainable development for tourism, the national government supported Aklan in terms of infrastructures. /MP
