Independence Day In Kalibo

by ERNESTO T. SOLIDUM

In Kalibo, Aklan, Mayor William Lachica in his Independence Day message said,  defense of freedom and democracy is a common endeavor. This is forging ahead despite seemingly insurmountable problems and coming out victorious in the end. He recalled epic struggle of Aklan’s katipuneros that resulted to their untimely death and martyrdom. During Japanese occupation, outstanding war heroes are Capt. Gil M. Mijares and Col. Pastor Martelino who remained true to their integrity and loyalty that turn quisling or corroborate with the enemy. There may be countless others whose heroic exploits have remained unknown to this date.

Recent history proves that Filipinos’ love for freedom remains supreme. Once maligned or corrupted, people rises up in open defiance through demonstration and protests. EDSA People Power or Yellow Revolution of 1986 ended the 19 years of martial rule. Nevertheless, the war on hunger, poverty and ignorance is a continuous struggle. “Tuwid na Daan” must be ingrained into our national character said the municipal Chief Executive.

Independence Day program, interesting highlights included lowering of Stars and Stripes while Star Spangled Banner hymn was played and raising of Philippine Flag in its stead. Floral offering at the foot of monuments of Dr. Jose P. Rizal, Andres Bonifacio, Capt. Gil M. Mijares and Col. Pastor Martelino were done by Municipal officials of Kalibo. PNP contingent headed by Sr. Police Inspector Aden Lagradante and maritime cadets of Aklan Polytechnic College provided moral support and inspiration.

The one hour program at the park was witnessed only by a handful of people majority of them are teachers and students. Certainly, old folks miss the halcyon days when Independence Day is celebrated with much color, participation and excitement. This is simple manifestation of love for country and honoring our fallen heroes and martyrs. Surviving heroes of World War II shed copious tears every time the Philippine flag is raised during special ceremonies. Indeed times have drastically changed now – for the worse. /MP
